Nokia has this morning unveiled the Asha 210, a new feature phone with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Labelled by Nokia as “the most social Asha yet”, the device has a dedicated button for accessing popular social networks such as Facebook. It also marks the beginning of a strong partnership with WhatsApp instant messaging. The app integrates with the Asha phonebook, with a dedicated key on the front of the phone to read and send instant messages.

The Asha 210 runs the Series 40 mobile operating system. Whilst it only supports Wi-Fi and 2G mobile networks (so no 3G or 4G connectivity), the battery does boast an impressive standby time of 46 days.

It’s an affordable handset, but, as one might expect, that comes with its fair share of trade-offs. The Asha 210 is equipped with an unspecified processor below 1GHz, as well as just 64 MB of flash memory – although thankfully this can be increased by up to 32GB with a microSD card.

The 2-megapixel rear-facing camera comes with 4x digital zoom. There is no front-facing camera; however, in Nokia’s self-portrait mode, users are given help in taking a picture of themselves using numerous voice prompts.

The device will be available in yellow, black, white, cyan and magenta during the second quarter of 2013, although not all color schemes will be sold in every region. The Asha 210 also has a pleasing design, with soft curves, a matte finish and a close-to-unibody feel.

Whilst the Asha range is designed to be affordable, Nokia has managed to retain the build quality and hardware sensibilities that make them such a popular choice for many businesses. One example is the dedicated camera key on the right-hand side, which launches the relevant app even when the device is locked. It’s a small improvement, but one that will likely be welcomed by frequent camera users.

When you also consider the inclusion of some of Nokia’s other exclusive software features, such as ‘Slam’ sharing and the Nokia Xpress Browser, it’s clear why the Asha line is so popular.
