A new year will inevitably bring another wave of smartphones to the market. Here’s a round-up of what can be expected in terms of mobile devices this year from the major mobile manufacturers!
Samsung are expected to release two new handsets early in 2014; the Galaxy Round, with a curved 5.7in screen, has already been announced, curving side to side unlike the up and down LG G Flex announced recently by LG.
The new flagship Galaxy S6 is expected to have a 64-bit processor and a more premium feel than its predecessors, potentially including an iPhone 5s-style fingerprint scanner. Some have even speculated that it could be the first 4K Ultra HD Smartphone, and could be made dust and waterproof to compete with the likes of the Sony Xperia range.
Apple will most likely release a new flagship, the iPhone 6, towards the end of 2014, in keeping with the usual launch pattern. However, some analysts have predicted a launch in May, which could be Apple’s first step into the ‘phablet’ world, bringing a 6in ‘iPhone Air’ to sit alongside their latest iPad.
The next flagship iPhone is predicted to have a bigger display made of unscratchable Sapphire glass, and to be even thinner and lighter than the lithe iPhone 5s. Rumours and leaks surrounding this handset will be rife throughout 2014, and we will bring you all the latest news as we hear it!
Nokia devices have become increasingly popular this year, particularly due to having a range of devices, from the budget Lumia 520 to the Lumia 1520 ‘phablet’, which suits everybody. At least one more handset is expected, although not necessarily for UK release, which is the Lumia 929. The Lumia 929 will have a 5in full HD display and a multi-megapixel PureView camera (like the Lumia 1020). Watch this space!
Whilst BlackBerry have not given any hints as to new devices which we could expect in 2014, there are indications that they may again move away from consumer-focused devices such as the Z10. Recent quotes from their new CEO, John Chan, have suggested that any new devices will feature the full QWERTY keyboard loved by so many BlackBerry users.
The much-acclaimed HTC One won a set of prestigious titles in 2013, including Phone of the Year, Gadget of the Year and the T3 Design award at the T3 Gadget Awards, and was followed by the HTC One Mini and HTC One Max. A new handset is expected to launch in Q1 of 2014, and is likely to run the latest Android OS (4.4 KitKat) with a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm chip and a 5 inch display.
Speaking of which, it is likely that Sony will release a selection of new Xperia handsets, including the Z1 Compact and the Z1S, both of which were announced at CES. The Xperia Z2, with a slightly larger display and improved performance, will also be released at some point in 2014. All are fully waterproof and include the impressive camera technology that has made the Xperia Z1 so popular.
